General
The district employs one Public health Nurse who divides time between the two buildings. The nurse is available to appraise the health status of students. If there is evidence of a health problem with a student, a parent or guardian will be contacted by school staff. The licensed school nurse counsels students, parents and others regarding health matters; helps prevent and control diseases; and serves as a resource person. She makes home visits as necessary and is a liaison between school and family.
Precautions
If a child is ill, please keep him/her at home. When children are in a group, illness spreads quickly. The following recommendations should be followed.
Children should remain at home:
•The first 2 days of a cold which is when they are most infectious.
• For 24 hours after a fever from any cause has returned to normal without the use of fever reducing medications (tylenol or advil).
• With a temperature of over 100 degrees by mouth.
• With any intestinal disorder causing diarrhea, vomiting or nausea.
• With any communicable disease such as chicken pox or influenza. Contact the nurse regarding when your child may return to school.
• With any infectious skin rash, such as impetigo or ring worm. The child may return to school 24 hours after treatment has been started.
• With a nasal discharge that is colored, discharge from the eyes or ears and inflammation of the eyes.
• For a full 24 hours after being on medication for strep throat.
Notification of Student Absences due to Illness or Injury
Please inform the school if your child is absent or has an extended illness or surgery. A phone call or note must accompany a child returning to school for absences and tardiness.
Student Accidents
In the event of a serious illness or accident in school, the nurse, principal, secretary or teacher will make every attempt to contact a parent/guardian. In the case of joint custody once a parent/guardian has been reached it is the responsibility of that parent/guardian to notify other care givers. If a parent or guardian cannot be reached, the child will be taken for emergency care as needed. If the injury or illness is such that it would be dangerous to move the child, 911 will be called. The child would not be sent alone to the hospital; an adult would accompany the student. An accident form will be completed by school personnel.
C.R.E.S. Recess: Students are expected to participate in recess activities. Please be sure your child has weather appropriate clothing each day. If a student is to be excused from recess for a short time, a written note from the parent is required. The school nurse will remain in the nurse’s office during the noon recess so that she will be available if an emergency arises. This time will be from 11:45 to 1:30 p.m.
Records
Health Card- A health record of each student is required by Minnesota State Law. Any disease or immunization a child has had during the summer or the school year should be reported to the school nurse so that the information can be recorded. This information is cumulative.
Immunization records are kept on each student, immunization records must be kept by the school for 5 years past a student’s graduation date. C-I schools currently keep the record available for 20 years past the graduation date and can be obtained through the nurse by request of the individual.
Student Emergency Data Card
During the first week of school students will be bringing home a Student Emergency Data Card. This card should be completed for each child in your family and returned to the school as soon as possible. School officials must have appropriate emergency information, including emergency contact phone numbers, to aid in providing for your child’s safety. Changes in information should be given to the office secretary as they occur.
Parent Notification to Pick-Up Child at School
We will call you and ask that you pick up your child if we see:
• Elevated temperature
• Unknown skin rash or open sores
• Redness, irritation or discharge from the eyes
• Persistent cough or runny nose
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Earache or sore throat
Communicable diseases
Students in the classroom who have rashes or other possible communicable conditions, such as impetigo, strep throat or pink eye, will be sent to see the nurse. The nurse will contact the parent or guardian if a communicable condition is suspected and the student will be required to have the condition evaluated by a doctor. If treatment is needed, a child should out of school until 24 hours of treatment has been given.
Screenings
Vision and hearing screenings are done on a regular basis at school. Children are screened in first, third, fifth, seventh and tenth grade. Any referrals are mailed to the parent or guardian. Vision and hearing screenings are also done by parent or teacher request. Early Childhood Screening is offered to 3-5 year old children living in the school district.
Physical Education
Students are expected to participate in physical education unless they have a health problem. Students may be excused from physical education for up to three days with a parent’s written request. Beyond that, a doctor’s excuse is needed.
