Crosby-Ironton School District
Beginning on Monday, October 19th, the Cuyuna Range Elementary School (CRES) will be converting to a hybrid model, as its learning model, until further notice. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade have been divided into two separate cohorts. Cohort A will attend school each Monday and Wednesday. Cohort B will attend school each Tuesday and Thursday. Fridays will continue to be used for distance learning and deep cleaning, in accordance with the school district's hybrid learning plan. Families will be notified which cohort their child is in, sometime during the week of October 5th.
No school for elementary students beginning on Monday, October 12th through Friday, October 16th. Classes for elementary students have been cancelled during these dates, so that teachers can plan and prepare for successful implementation of the hybrid model at the elementary school on Monday, October 19th. According to the superintendent, Jamie Skjeveland, "Many people don't realize how challenging it is for our teachers to be responsible for two sets of student groups at the same time. Our teachers will be providing in-person instruction to one cohort on one day, while providing learning opportunities to the other cohort of students who are distance learning at the same time. It's a real juggling act that takes several hours of planning and preparation. This is why elementary students will not have classes during the week of October 12th. Since the MEA Convention is held on Thursday and Friday of that week (October 15th and 16th), teachers will have only three days to prepare for the new hybrid instructional model that will be implemented on Monday, October 19th."
At the Crosby-Ironton High School, students have been in a hybrid model since the first day of school. The high school students, in grade 7-12, will continue to have classes, as usual, from October 12th through October 14th. When school resumes on Monday, October 19th, the entire school district will be in the hybrid model.
One of the reasons that the Crosby-Ironton School District has shifted to a more restrictive (hybrid) learning model, is due largely to the increase in numbers of positive Covid-19 cases reported in Crow Wing County. The current report shows that there are 29 (per 10,000) positive cases in Crow Wing County. That number is projected to increase over the next few weeks, according to the Crow Wing County Public Health Department. The school district will continue to monitor the number of positive Covid-19 cases. If the numbers continue to increase as projected, the high school may have to convert to a distance learning model. However, that decision has not been made at this time.
